"It's going to be tough to beat that guy"

"It's going to be tough to beat that guy"

Washington Post released an interesting article on the size of the Obama supporting crowd at the Milford, New Hampshire Labor Day parade entitled, Barack Obama, Drawing the Big Crowds. Barack Obama drew crowds larger than any of the other '08 candidates' supporters at the parade.

If the Milford parade several hours later was a snapshot of how Obama is faring, it bodes well. He drew by far the loudest and most boisterous group of supporters, who became so enthusiastic about marching that they started down the road ahead of schedule -- and were then banished by organizers to the back of the parade line. (The second-largest group was an orderly bunch of Romney backers, followed by a loud cadre carrying signs for Sen. Christopher J. Dodd -- though Dodd's group included many members of his family.)

Obama's crowds were so large and intimidating that one Mitt Romney supporter apparently became discouraged according to the Post article.

As Sen. Barack Obama led a rowdy mob down the street here during a Labor Day parade, an organizer wearing a Mitt Romney pin stood on the sidewalk and stared in astonishment.

"It's going to be tough to beat that guy," he said, shaking his head, to another man with a Romney sign.

Kudos to those NH Obama supporters for showing there is no shortage of enthusiasm for the Obama campaign. I have a very good feeling about the coming nomination.

"Barack Obama drews crowds larger than any of the other '08 candidates."

I read the Washington Post article and nowhere does it state that the parade crowd was larger than any of the other 08 candidates'.  Specifically, I would like to find out if this crowd exceeded the 4500 and 5000 people that came out to the two Clinton event.   From the looks of it, that seems very unlikely, but if someone has confirmation of the size of the crowd here, that would help.   In comparison to Romney it was probably a big crowd, but compared to the Clinton's 2 events?  Highly doubtful.  Crowd confirmation, please.

This article points to about 200 Milford parade walkers for Obama, which hardly compares to the crowd sizes Clinton had yesterday:

Re: (none / 0)

I'm fairly confident that the two Clinton rallies, just 50 miles apart, on Sunday were the two biggest political rallies of the year in New Hampshire -- by a considerable margin.

crowd envy? (none / 0)

Typo? drew(s).

The diary and the article were only referring the the support at that parade. Don't be so defensive.

We all know Hillary has a big crowd too.

Re: crowd envy? (none / 0)

It was a group of about 200.  The diary seems a bit misleading on "crowd sizes," but ok.  From the article in the Union leader the "loud and boisterous" part was not appreciated by all paraders, though.

it's all relative (none / 0)

For a small town parade having 200 supporters marching with you is pretty good. The fact that Obama outdrew Romney's machine is impressive.

re: boisterous.

It was funny... an NPR interview with a Dodd supported was interrupted because the Obama crowd was too loud for them to hear each other. That was on the radio yesterday.

Re: it's all relative (none / 0)

I think any Democrat outdraws any Republican these days.  The GOP brand is damaged right now.

To the crowd:  200 is not bad for a parade, but Obama was in it.  I was just expecting him drawing more between the 2 NH events (the morning event that drew 400 and the parade that drew 200.)

lossing points... (none / 0)

..for not paying attention.

Romney did have more supporters then Dodd.

Re: lossing points... (none / 0)

Come on.  Splitting hairs?  Of course a Mike Gravel is not going to get a lot of support, not more than the GOP's top tier.  Our top-tier should beat their top-tier everytime.  And they do.   Still, I am a bit surprised that Obama only drew 600 total for 2 campaign appearances in NH to the 9,500 Clinton got.   Neither appearance was deliberately kept small, so what gives?

Re: lossing points... (none / 0)

I'm not the one who pronounced than any democrat beats any republican. Try to be more careful.

Try not to worry about Obama. He was able to draw 2K in Kentucky last week. Obama fires up crowd in Lexington and that was without using an x-president as a draw.

Re: it's all relative (none / 0)

Romney doesn't have a machine. I'm not seeing evidence that he is drawing crowds anywhere. The Republicans can't even try to pull off the kind of large outdoor rallies that Obama and Clinton are doing. They can't draw any people. The only big crowds they see are captive audiences (like the Young Republicans convention) or along parade routes.

Why do you think Romney has to shove his face into Obama's parade, just like he did to the Clintons in Iowa on the 4th of July.

It's pathetic, really.

Re: it's all relative (none / 0)

Romney does get the best supporters money can buy. Didn't you hear about the Iowa Straw Poll?

The one thing Republicans know how to do is stage manage a campaign. I'm sure there were a line charter buses parked outside of town.

This was a verbatim quote from the article:

Re: (none / 0)

The diarist updated the diary to change his wording to now read:

Barack Obama drew crowds larger than any of the other '08 candidates' supporters at the parade.

Before the update, the quote was the one I listed above.  So, it has been clarified that the "crowd of 200" was in reference to the parade only, which means that the passage now makes sense.

Updated the diary (2.00 / 1)

to reflect the context.  This article discuss crowd sizes related to the scope of the parade and nothing more.

I also fixed the spelling.
